Working on a series of templates for Jewish texts, from Kiddush to Ketubah, I also made a template for candle lighting. It wasn’t a subject I learned much about at the time, and I wasn’t sure what to do with it.
And then I figured I can actually use wax, instead of masking, in order to create the space-like border. I wasn’t so clear on an obvious candle lighting idea, so I shared a personal shabbat idea and experience and combined it with candle lighting. What I am expressing here is the candle lighting as transition into Shabbat, which is a time of harmony with the God’s universe, a pause from our daily endeavors and listening to creation, thus inviting it into our homes. So the starts become the candles (literally, in this case. It is wax!), and the space of existence (represented by space and nebulae, which is symbolic) inserting color into the shelter over our heads – the home.

בזמנו, עבדתי על סדרת ציורים עבור טקסטים שונים, מקידוש ועד כתובה, כולל הדלקת נרות. זה היה נושא אשר לא למדתי לעומק בזמנו, ולא ידעתי מה לעשות איתו
ואז חשבתי שאני יכול ממש להתשמש בנרות – בשעווה – כדי ליצור את האפקט של כוכבים בחלל, בתוך המסגרת. לא הכרתי מקרוב רעיונות מסויימים של הדלקת נרות, ולכן שילבתי בציור רעיון וחוויה אישית של קבלת שבת עם ההדלקה. הרעיון שאני מנסה לבטא הוא כיצד הדלקת הנרות, המבדילות בין ששת ימי המעשה ליום שבת, יום מנוחה, הוא ההרמוניה עם הבריאה. פסק זמן ממלאכה ויצירה אנושית, כדי לחוש את מרחב היצירה בו אנו חיים, אותו יצר בורא עולם עבור עולמו. וזה הסימליות של החלל וגרמי השמיים – החלל בו אנו קיימים. הכוכבים הופכים לנרות השבת (העשויות משאווה, ממש), והחלל עצמו משלב עם קורת הגג שעל ראשנו – הבית. וכאן ניתנת הערכה מיוחדת לאשה, האחראית על הבית ועל הדלקת הנרות
